Fillmore Riley to close office on September 30 to observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Overview
The federal government recently passed legislation to make September 30 a federal statutory holiday called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. In observance, our office will be closed on September 30, 2021, to recognize and commemorate the legacy of residential schools.
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation has antecedents in the 2015 report Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action. The report includes 94 calls to action to redress the legacy of residential schools and advance the process of Canadian reconciliation.
The federal government responded to the Call to Action #80 by establishing the statutory federal holiday “to honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.”
Our team is encouraged to participate in the process of Canadian reconciliation by honouring the survivors and mourning the lives lost to Canada’s residential school system.
