Students
Your future is our future.
At Fillmore Riley, we know that the strength of our firm comes from attracting and keeping talented lawyers. We hire students with a view to retaining them long-term to develop their practice with us.
As a student, you will be engaged in different practice areas, be exposed to the operation of the firm as a whole, and work with partners, counsel and associates who are committed to your success. We have even developed our own “Gatekeeper System” that gives our students a consistent, well-balanced and manageable workflow.
Start here. Succeed here.
A tradition of growth from within.
Our efforts in hiring and training students are consciously directed toward future growth and development. Over the last decade, 100 per cent of articling students have joined the firm as associates after completion of articles.
Our commitment to our students does not end after articling; our associates continue to be supported after their call to the bar through our mentorship program, marketing and business development resources (including a business development spending account) and a competitive compensation system that ensures job and income security.
Salary & benefits for articling students.
Our articling students receive compensation that is commensurate with other large law firms in Manitoba as well as an attractive benefits package. The firm pays for all related PREP, Bar Admission, and Articling and Law Society of Manitoba fees.
Resources for articling students.
Articling students will have access to an in-house librarian, a legal assistant, an extensive physical and online library and all of the state-of-the-art technology available at Fillmore Riley.
You will also be assigned to a partner who acts as a principal throughout your articling year. Committed to fostering your professional development, your principal acts as a guide and resource. The Articling Committee, composed of lawyers from various practice groups and your peers, is another resource that rounds out your articling experience. Typically held in a casual atmosphere, the monthly meetings focus on practice management skills and instruction in the various practice areas. The partner assigned to run our Gatekeeper System also acts as a mentor and guide to our students, holding regular meetings to discuss your workflow and work interests.
How to Apply
-
Summer Student
-
Fillmore Riley prides itself on offering summer students a practical, hands-on experience at a leading Manitoba law firm. Summer students will work with Fillmore Riley's highly respected lawyers and gain exposure to various practice areas of law.
We are currently accepting applications to fill up to three summer student positions for the summer of 2025. Second-year law students may apply. We offer a collaborative, friendly work culture, and compensation that is competitive with other leading law firms in Manitoba.
Fillmore Riley's Gatekeeper system ensures students receive a well-rounded experience. Under this system, one designated partner receives all of the student assignments from lawyers in the firm and distributes the assignments evenly among students. By effectively managing workflow, the "gatekeeper" exposes summer students to a diverse range of legal work.
Fillmore Riley is committed to maintaining an inclusive work environment composed of people with diverse backgrounds, perspectives and identities. Reasonable accommodations are available to applicants with disabilities. We encourage applications from all qualified candidates.
The application deadline for students to submit resumes, cover letters and all university transcripts (i.e. undergraduate and law school transcripts) is no later than 12:00 (noon) CT on Friday, October 4, 2024. Please ensure your applications package includes the following:
- Cover Letter
- Resume
- Undergraduate Transcript (copy or PDF of original, not web-based)
- Law Transcript (copy or PDF of original, not web-based)
Please send your application to the attention of Aaron Challis.
