Fillmore Riley proudly sponsors the 2024 Robson Hall Negotiation Competition
Overview
Fillmore Riley LLP is proud to sponsor the Robson Hall Negotiation Competition for the fifteenth consecutive year.
The Nineteenth Annual Robson Hall Negotiation Competition, to be held the evening of October 17, 2024, gives third-year students who were top performers in the Legal Negotiation course the opportunity to compete for the prestigious honour of representing Robson Hall in the Canadian National Negotiation Competition.
"I am delighted that Fillmore Riley has continued its long-standing tradition of supporting this competition," said Professor Bruce Curran, a Robson Hall faculty member who helps organize the competition. "Fillmore Riley demonstrates its understanding of the importance of negotiation, and its commitment to training young lawyers, through its generous support of the competition."
The purpose of this year's negotiation is for an innovative think tank to commission a renowned artist to create a large multimedia art installation to be the centrepiece at its planned new facilities. The students will try to negotiate an agreement on important points such as the design approval process, artistic freedom, copyright, the artist's moral rights, the purchase price, and the payment schedule.
In teams of two, students representing one of the parties will meet with the other party to negotiate an agreement, with each team possessing confidential information about the background and their clients' settlement preferences. All negotiations will take place under the ever-watchful eyes of Fillmore Riley judges, who will score each team's negotiation skills.
"I am always extremely impressed at the calibre of judging of the Fillmore Riley lawyers, and the mentorship they provide to law students through this event," says Professor Curran.
Fillmore Riley's lawyers have volunteered their time as judges for the competition since its inception. Aaron Challis, Sven Hombach, Kirk Vilks, Kelsey Yakimoski, Meghan Payment, Michael Zacharias, Andrea Signorelli, David Thiessen, Amber Harms, Emily Rempel, Alexa Smith and Nick Noonan will serve as this year's judges.
"Strong negotiation skills are essential to being a good lawyer," said Aaron Challis, a partner of Fillmore Riley and chair of the firm's Professional Recruitment Committee. "We're proud to sponsor a competition that gives students the opportunity to refine their negotiation skills before they become practising lawyers."
