Benchmark Litigation recognizes Bernice Bowley as one of the Top 50 Women in Litigation in Canada for 2021
Overview
For the fifth consecutive year, Bernice Bowley is the only lawyer from Manitoba who has been recognized in Benchmark Litigation’s publication Top 50 Women in Litigation in Canada.
The Top 50 Women in Canada 2021 publication’s extensive research process entails six months of investigation into the individual litigators’ professional activities as well as client feedback surveys and individual interviews. Lawyers named to the 2021 publication were chosen through several phases of research: the review of their recent case work, peer reviews, and a consideration of client feedback on their performances.
“Bernice Bowley is one of the leading litigators at Winnipeg's Fillmore Riley. Typically touted for her prominence in the firm’s celebrated insurance practice, she has also raised her profile in other areas, namely in municipal law,” said Benchmark Litigation’s editor Michael Rafalowich.
Bernice is the chair of Litigation practice. She maintains a comprehensive commercial insurance litigation practice, including general insurance defence, professional errors and omissions, product liability, construction, subrogation and coverage.
Bernice recently acted for the Rural Municipality of St. Andrews on a high-profile municipal matter that received extensive media coverage. Sul v. The Rural Municipality of St. Andrews, Manitoba et al., 2021 MBQB 152 (CanLII). By Notice of Application for judicial review, the Mayor of the Rural Municipality of St. Andrews, Joy Sul, challenged an amended Procedures By-Law and two resolutions that had the effect of allowing a majority vote so that any member of council could carry out the duties of chair of council meetings and spokesperson for the municipality. The Mayor’s application was dismissed with costs awarded against her.
